bride and groom walking down the aisle

I absolutely LOVED shooting Quang and Nicole’s wedding. The venue was a photographer’s dream. The historic Berkeley City Club right in the middle of downtown Berkeley…Wow!  But the most amazing part was Quang and Nicole.  They are just beautiful people! So loving and generous, and absolutely gorgeous as you will see.  And those  two, I tell you, had the loviest group of friends I have ever met. Lots of hugs and laughs!

Nicole’s dress was perfect. It had a beautiful vintage feel to it, matching of course, the incredible venue. She was a stunning bride.

There were so many unique parts to this whole experience. Here are some traditions you don’t see everyday! Handfasting, Jumping the Broom, and a Dragon Dance at the reception. ( Which by the way was a surprise from Nicole to Quang!)

Thank you, Quang and Nicole, for the honor of shooting your wedding! May you always run through the sprinklers, skip through town, laugh hysterically and hold hands forever.

I was asked to shoot several baseball games, and I have to tell you, they were a blast! These kids can play ball and they’re just so cute! Here are a few of my faves…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….._mg_8982………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Truly, I have never met someone so present, so supportive, so…concrete. I had the privelege of hanging out with The Gnome, a few weeks ago, at Pat and Bri’s wedding. I was honored to shoot The Gnome and his best friends. The Gnome was adopted off the front lawn of a neighbor many many years ago by Pat and his friends. They took him in, cared for him and The Gnome has been a solid force in those young men’s lives since. Pat spoke of him fondly, “He goes everywhere with us! Even white water rafting!” It was such a blessing to see the return of love displayed by this little sweet guy! It was beautiful!

I’m sure he doesn’t have much, that made his contributing to the dollar dance that much more meaningful. After all, he is a grateful gnome.

And does that boy know how to dance!

Friends like these don’t come around very often. The Gnome can be an inspiration to us all.

Got a text on Wednesday from our old pal Pete Prevost. We hadn’t seen him since his band at the time, Johnny Come Lately, stayed at our house 6 years ago! His current band, Sanctus Real, was playing at Cornerstone in Wildomar so we dropped the kids off at Grandma’s and went to the concert. They were awesome! I couldn’t help but capture some rockin’ moments, there were quite a few of them ;)

Thanks so much for visiting my blogsite! Make sure to check back often for some wacky fun and new info in the realm of jolynne photography! Elliot’s first broken bone…fell out of a tree on Sunday. When the doctor asked, “Now, are you going to climb trees again?” He responded undoubtedly…”Yes.”
That’s my boy!!

Glen Martinez (photo by Jared Wilson)

Glen Martinez is a Hero

A Hero to his family

A Hero to his wife

A Hero to his town

A Hero to his country

I had the privilege of being the second photographer with Jared Wilson for Glen and Melissa Martinez’ wedding in December. Both Marines. Both beautiful people.

I got a call from Jared telling of Glen’s death in Iraq on May 2. Melissa had called Jared to photograph the funeral. She wanted to document and remember every honor that was due to Glen. Jared then asked me to join him, since we were both there for them on their wedding day. I was honored to do so. I flew to Colorado the next week for the funeral in Glen’s hometown, Monte Vista.

It was the most amazing and beautiful thing to see a whole town come to honor their Hero. Glen was an incredible athlete, son, friend, husband, and Marine. Someone shared about him in everyone of those areas. And when we drove to the Memorial Center, the rest of the town lined the streets with flags, and signs thanking Glen. It must have been every policeman, every fire fighter all there to honor him, with firetrucks on either side of the road, ladders touching over the road with a flag hanging. It was by far the most touching thing I have ever witnessed.

Writing this blog is difficult for me. But it is something I want to share because Glen and Melissa are extraordinary. And everyone should hear.

Before Glen and Melissa left for Fallujah, they wrote,

“…As you all know, Glen and I are leaving this week for Iraq! We are excited to go and do our part once again to help out those less fortunate than ourselves! Our last deployment to Fallujah was a fantastic experience. We really felt very appreciated and that we were making a difference out there. Despite what the news shows, most Iraqis are happy that we are there helping them. We are building schools, a new government and ensuring the safety of their families for hopefully many years to come. It is an indescribable feeling to have Iraqi women hand you their babies because they want you to take your picture with them; or to give you candy and other gifts as they come through your checkpoint…”

Sometimes… to hear an individual story brings to light a situation you may think you have opinions about…from afar. I know that stepping into Glen and Melissa’s world has opened my eyes to the beauty of what it means to truly serve people. I am touched by them. I am so grateful for Glen and Melissa’s servant hearts.

Today, do more than enjoy your day off.

Our friend Tony is the best.

Tony is the bass player in Joey’s band skypark, and is a high school French teacher at Diamond Bar High School. Tony discovered one of his student’s amazing musical talents and has been encouraging him in them.

Tony is teacher of the century in my opinion…he got Garrett Snook (a high school senior) a really sweet gig…the Senior Prom! Not only did he get him the gig, he got him a back up band and pay. The band was named Snook and included none other than Tony, Keith (drummer for skpark) and Joey! They practiced every Saturday for awhile and learned Garretts’ music.

Prom was held at The House of Blues which made it that much more exciting to play. It was awesome!! The minute they entered the stage, the crowd went crazy!

The high schoolers whose hands were glued to their dates’ butts were now raising high in the air in rock-n-roll happiness :)

It was great to see the skypark guys play together, they were awesome as always, and it was especially awesome to know that this was probably something that will impact Garrett for the rest of his life!

Anyone who comes in contact with Joey Keith Tony (and Tyrone even though he wasn’t here for this one) can’t go away from that time without being impacted. There has always been and will always be something special about those four :) I am so proud of them!! And Garrett ROCKED!!

I was the photographer for the evening. Here are the rockers:

MARCH AIR FORCE BASE, AIR FEST 2008
In Elliot’s words…this was “SPECTACULAR!!” I had never seen anything like it. First of all, I will never in my entire life fully grasp the thought that a huge HUNK OF METAL can just fly through the air. Seriously, I can’t get over it. Whenever I fly, I have to sit by the window just to make sure we’re staying UP. I’ve gotten over being a total freak and planning for my death each time I fly, but I still look out the window and just can’t BELIEVE that I am flying! So to see not only huge hunks of metal (sounds like a band name!) flying through the air, but flipping and falling and zooming and….oh, I thought my brain was going to explode! It was exhilarating!!!
So…I will share some of our fun with you…
The Thunderbirds put on a show. It was amazing!

They did a stunt where it really did look like they were going to crash, going straight at each other…but they didn’t, by what looked like inches to us!

Eating lunch under the wing of a very large hunk of flying metal

Auntie Becky taking the girls on a flight…of stairs:) I couldn’t resist.

I followed with the camera. This is the inside of that carrier.

And the view from the other side…
These are active fighter jets. They just stopped by for a friendly Hello, then back to work just hours after the open house. The pilots were there to talk and pose…with everyone.

I’m usually a blogger with lots of visual and little words…but I am branching out! I wanted to share some words with you because I have just had an experience that I am really excited about!
I had the pleasure of taking the Missional Photography class at Rock Harbor Christian Church in Costa Mesa for the last month. My bro-in-law, Ian, told me about it a few months ago and thought I’d be interested because his friend, Dane Sanders, was teaching it and he said it would be awesome.
The final answer for me was that my friend and mentor, wedding photojournalist extraordinaire, Jared Wilson, emailed me the week before and said, “Tell me you’re taking that class!!” (He lives in Denver, or he would have!)So that was my cue to go! Although I hadn’t yet, Jared very well knew the names and works of the photographers teaching the class, Dane Sanders, Mike Colon and Jessica Claire. Three amazing and very well known wedding photographers.

Joey has encouraged me in my photogradventures since day zero and of course wanted me to go. He came home 2 1/2 hours early every week and stayed home with the kids so I could go to every class.I had no idea what to expect, but having a passion for photography and for missions, I went with eyes, ears and heart wide open.

Dane, Mike and Jessica all shared their experiences and expertise. From photos of their own mission trips to technical digital stuff, they gave us so much. And they were just so gracious. I mean, come on! These guys are the best (which by the way I figured out when I googled them all after class one night)and make buko bucks being creative and awesome and they spent four weeks answering the gooberiest of questions about photography…which by the way came a lot from me!!

This was exactly what I needed, further education in digital SLRs, but more importantly the purpose of the class, learning how to honor people’s lives through photography. Through assignments of taking 100 shots a day and taking pictures of random strangers to tell their stories, something came alive in me. The thought that I can tell a story with no words, that I can capture the beauty in a child of God and give dignity and respect to a life that society doesn’t think deserves it, fans a coal God lit inside of me long ago.

Because of this class, I met Cesar. In talking with him, I just felt his spirit radiate through his words. He actually wasn’t making a lot of sense! But I so enjoyed our time together! I think this picture just says so much about his personality :)

Okay, and Mike Colon thought so, too ;)

I am wondering with excitement about where God will take me next in this area of my life!
